As an Air Force veteran of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars it's unusual to read such an insightful work. Gupta captures the soul of the region. Often the writer tries to placate the reader with topical and "today's flavor" of political sentiment. Instead we read a compelling story that transcends enforced religious constrictions and we see a person who remains true to his culture and moral values. Those who have not been there don't understand the value or position of a gunsmith in a land made by war. Congratulations and KUDOs to Rakesh Gupta for such an accurate an truthful work! I downloaded this novella and finished it in under two hours. I couldn't put it down--it was that good.
Mr. Gupta is a talented storyteller with an ear for suspense, and knows how to tug the emotional heartstrings of the reader. It helps to have some basic understanding of Afghan culture and history in order to fully appreciate the story, but even without it, the stunning twist is told well enough where the reader understands its implications. I don't know if this author has written any other stories in this vein; I certainly hope he writes more.
For a non reader, I believe this book has done an impressive job of keeping me entertained and on my toes from the beginning to the end. The attention to detail the author has provided in describing emotions, events, thoughts etc is absolutely amazing. Being a visual person, I felt I could visualize most of the book based on the writing.
In terms of the story and content, I cannot insist anymore on the originality and suspense it created. For me it's always about sensing the main character and its potential in describing the story. I was quite impressed by the main character created by the author.
I enjoy suspenseful stories with a twist, and this book delivered one. I cannot wait for the author's next release.
